Cancelling DigitalOcean

About 40 minutes · Hard

  1. DESTROY the resources, do not just stop them

A powered-off droplet still bills. Only destroying it stops the charge.

  2. Back up anything you need — snapshots, databases, volumes, Spaces

  3. Go through every resource type: droplets, volumes, snapshots, load balancers, databases, Spaces, reserved IPs

  4. Destroy each one, then confirm the billing page shows nothing

  5. Close the account only once the balance is settled

What happens after you cancel
POWERING OFF A DROPLET DOES NOT STOP THE BILL. This is the most expensive misunderstanding in cloud hosting and DigitalOcean is explicit about it: a droplet that is switched off still reserves its resources and still bills by the hour. Only DESTROYING it stops the charge. And droplets are not the only thing billing. Volumes, snapshots, backups, reserved IP addresses, load balancers, managed databases and Spaces buckets are each billed separately and each survive the droplet they were attached to. People destroy a server, see the bill continue, and cannot work out why — it is almost always a forgotten volume or a pile of snapshots. Go through every resource type in the control panel, not just the droplet list. BACK UP FIRST. Destroying is immediate and irreversible: the disk is gone, not archived. Take what you need — a snapshot to download, a database dump, the files out of Spaces — and verify the backup opens before you destroy anything. Once everything is destroyed, the billing page should show nothing pending. Settle the final balance before closing the account.

Find possible recurring subscriptions in your bank statement. Cancel OS reads a statement export you give it and flags the charges that look recurring, for you to confirm.
