Ask what the early termination fee is BEFORE agreeing to anything
Get the cancellation reference and the final bill date in writing
Return leased equipment if you have any, and keep the receipt

- None — cancelling takes effect straight away. Satellite plans commonly run on a 24-month agreement with an early termination fee that is charged per remaining month.

- DIRECTV is two different products with the same name, and which one you have decides how expensive leaving is. STREAMING plans are month to month, have no equipment and no termination fee. SATELLITE plans commonly sit inside a 24-month agreement, charge an early termination fee for each month remaining, and require leased equipment to be sent back — receivers, the Genie, sometimes the dish hardware. Ask for the exact termination fee before you agree to anything, and get the cancellation reference number and final bill date in writing. This is a phone retention conversation by design: offers will come, and repeating the request plainly is the whole technique. If you return equipment, keep the shipping receipt until the final bill clears. Unreturned-equipment charges are the single most common dispute here, and the receipt is what ends the argument.
