What happens after you cancel
Your repositories are safe — the code is in git and every clone is a full copy. What is not in git is everything AROUND the code: issues, merge request discussions, the wiki, CI configuration history and the review conversations that explain why things are the way they are. GitLab's project export packages those together, and taking it is the whole job. CI/CD MINUTES are billed separately from the plan and are the usual source of a bill that does not fall after cancelling. So is storage. Check both. Downgrading keeps the projects and reduces the features — fewer approval rules, fewer security scans, tighter minute allowances — rather than removing anything. Private repositories stay private on the free tier. An annual subscription runs to the end of its term.
