Cancelling Gusto

About 60 minutes · Very hard

  1. Do not cancel mid-quarter without a plan for the filings

Payroll tax returns and year-end forms are deadlines that outlive the subscription.

  2. Download every payroll report, tax filing and employee document

  3. Confirm who files the remaining returns — Gusto or you

  4. Tell your employees where their year-end forms will come from

  5. Contact Gusto to close the account, and keep the confirmation

Notice period
None — cancelling takes effect straight away. Payroll tax deposits and quarterly and annual filings have statutory deadlines that continue after the subscription ends.

What happens after you cancel
Payroll is the one subscription in this directory where cancelling badly creates a LEGAL problem rather than an inconvenience. Payroll tax deposits and quarterly and annual returns have statutory deadlines, and those deadlines do not care that you changed provider. Before you cancel, get a clear answer in writing to one question: WHO FILES THE REMAINING RETURNS — Gusto or you? Timing matters more than anything else. Leaving at the end of a quarter, and ideally at the end of a tax year, is far cleaner than leaving in the middle of one, because a mid-year move splits the year's wage and tax totals across two systems and both have to reconcile for the year-end forms to be right. Download everything while you still have access: payroll registers, tax filings and their confirmations, employee records, and the year-end forms. Your EMPLOYEES need their year-end documents, and telling them in advance where those will come from prevents a scramble in January. Benefits, workers' compensation and any state registrations administered through Gusto need their own handover — they do not move with the payroll data.
