- The downgrade is scheduled rather than immediate: it takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle, the following month or the following year depending on what you were on. Your data stays in the account. What catches teams is the shape of the free plan rather than any deletion. Free allows 2 seats and 3 boards, and if the account is over those limits the existing data goes VIEW-ONLY — you can open and read everything, but you cannot add items or create boards. A busy workspace does not disappear, it quietly stops accepting new work, which is easy to mistake for a fault. Count your seats and boards against those limits before the cycle turns, and export anything you would rather hold yourself. If you close the account outright instead, monday.com asks whether to keep the data for later or delete it — that choice is yours to make deliberately.
